The wool fibers are straightened and smoothed as they go through one cad cylinder after another. The photo 318.a shows a section of a back winder.
Carding step 2.
After carding, the wide, thin web of wool fiber into strips. These fragile fibers are rolled into roping. The roping on the card spools is then ready for spinning into wool.
Mule spinning.
The ends of the roping are fed from card spools mounted on a stationary frame to the bobbins revolving on the moving carriage. As the carriage moves away from the the frame, the roping starts to unwind. At a certain point a braking device stops the unreeling while the carriage continues its travel. This drafts, or elongates the strand of roping while the bobbins whirl at high speed as they spin the yarn. The carriage then reverses its direction and as it wheels back toward the frame, the bobbins wind up the spun yarn. The cycle is repeated until the bobbins are full.Photo 318.b shows a mule spinner machine.
Frame spinning.
The roping from a number of card spools is drawn, spun and wound onto bobbins at high speed. The twist given the strands locks the individual fibers together, building the strength needed for the threads of the fabric. Photo 318.c is a frame spinner in the mill.
Fulling Mill.
This step shrinks and thickens the wool cloth by moistening it and then heading and pressing the cloth. Photo 318. d shows one string of fulling machines.
Weaving.
Here thousands of yards of individual threads are brought together in the loom and woven into fabric. The woven cloth is trimmed in the shear room shown in photo 318.e.
