<text>James V. King was born in Maynard in 1911. He was the son of James J. (born 1874) and Ellen F. (born 1876), both born in Newfoundland. He had one brother, Matthew B. (born 1907 in Maynard). He grew up in Maynard and graduated from Maynard High School Class of 1929. His nickname was Jimmy from time as a child through his retirement. He was a Catholic and very religious. He attended mass most every day and participated in many church events. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

In his work for the town, he spent 45 years in various positions. He started work in 1932 as a member of the administrative staff for the Civil Works Administration (CWA) and Emergency Relief Administration (ERA) until 1936. In 1936, he became the coordinator of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) until 1942. In October 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he was a Yeoman First Class, serving until 1945. In 1945, he returned to work for the town, appointed Assistant Town Accountatn and Secretary for the Highway Department. He continued until 1951. In 1951, he was appointed Town Accountant. He also performed duties as Assistant Town Clerk, Clerk for the Retirement Board, and Executive Secretary to the Board of Selectmen. He retired in 1977 after some 45 years of service. A testimonial in his honor was held at the Town Building on November 13, 1977. This was followed by a dinner that evening at Alphonse's Powder Mill Restaurant. (The Elks Hall in 2024.)

Private United States Army
D Battery, 68th Coast Artillery Battalion
Anti-Aircraft Division
5th Army

Born: Apr 25, 1917
Died: Feb 17, 1944

An action report indicated that just before midnight on February 16th, the Germans had driven a two mile wide wedge between the 179th and 157th Infantry of the 45th Division. Three German regiments supported by sixty tanks were threatening the entire Anzio, Italy beachhead.

The Allies scrambled to plug the gap with hastily redeployed 90-MM anti-aircraft guns, naval gunfire, and units of the 1st Armored Division. American units at Anzio suffered heavy losses while defending their positions on the 16th through 18th of February.

Private Greeno had seen service in Africa and had been in the Army less than three years.

He is the third casualty from Harrison Street. Jerry had worked at the American Woolen Company before volunteering for service. Two brothers are currently stationed in Alabama and Puerto Rico.

The portrait is on display in the Maynard Veterans' Wall of Honor in the Soup Campbell Room, Lower Level of Maynard Town Hall.</text>
