The play was written by Father Felix, O.S.B., and first published around 1899, this five-act religious drama blends devotion, allegory, and moral instruction in the tradition of late-19th-century Catholic stage works. Drawing inspiration from the miraculous events at Lourdes, France, the play tells the story of a young noblewoman who is blind—both physically and spiritually—and a humble shepherdess whose simple faith leads to healing and revelation.

Presented in parish halls and Catholic schools at the turn of the century, The Shepherdess of Lourdes offered audiences both entertainment and religious instruction. Its themes of faith, humility, and divine compassion made it a popular choice for religious societies such as the Children of Mary Sodalities, who often performed it in celebration of Marian devotion and the miraculous message of Lourdes.</text>

Monographs, by nature, are focused and detailed research on a single topic (places, people, events, etc.) Many of these monographs, especially by guest authors outside of the Society's research team, contain personal anecdotes and details of life in town during their lifetime.

In the years preceding the 1971 Centennial of Maynard the rather new Maynard Historical Society gathered a series of monographs on a wide variety of topics. 96 papers, written by primarily by Birger Koski and Ralph Sheridan, plus a number of "guest" authors, many of these were read at Historical Society meetings in the late 1960's and then became source material for the 1871-1971 History of Maynard book written for the Centennial of the Town. Monographs from that project are titled as a "Centennial Monograph",

              <text>SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA SOCIETY
   by SAMUEL MICCICHE
(MAYNARD HISTORICAL SOCIETY)

The purpose of the society to unite all men and women who are practical Roman Catholic of Italian extraction, whether born in Italy or of Italian descent; any man or woman who may not be of Italian extraction, but is the husband or wife of a member of the society. Also to celebrate and perpetuate the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padova.

On February 27, 1938, the first meeting was held in which the signers agreed on the association. This meeting took place at the Elks' Hall on Main Street, Maynard, at 700 P.M.

After much discussion and planning on rules and regulations, the members relied on help and advice of Mr. Frank C. Sheridan, who made most all the legal arrangement possible. It was on March 7, 1938, when the society was presented with their official charter, officiated by Mr. Harold J. Morgan, who was a notary public at that time.

The charter has listed one hundred fifty-five (155) members. The following were the first officers of the society:

President: Antonio Mistretta
Vice-President: Enrichetta Viola
Recording Secretary: Vincent Lucchese
Financial Secretary: Frank Finnochi
Treasurer: Russell Salamone
Directors: Espedito Terrasi, Louis Terrasi, Josephine Finnochi, Antonio Fraticelli, Salvatore Terrasi, Antonio Curci, Gerlando Cirino, Mary Garlisi
Trustees: Michael Lalli, Louis DeGrappo, Charles Cannella.
Inside Guard: Antonio Veleno
Clerk: Frank Finnochi

A number of interesting activities took place in the many years of its existence. Every member is compelled to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receive Holy Communion in a body at the Mass on the Sunday nearest to June 13th, the date of the Feast Day of the Patron Saint Anthony of Padova.

After the Mass, the whole membership would partake In Communion Breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Hall. In the afternoon, the society held a short meeting to take care of the business of the month. At this meeting in June most of the activity takes place. After the meeting, an open house celebration takes place, with visiting officers and members of surrounding organizations in attendance. By this time the hall is full to capacity.

Among these groups are Catholic priests. Board of Selectmen, our Honorary Member, Mr. Frank C. Sheridan, the SS Indulgence Society of Maynard, St. Rocco Society of Natick, St. Michael's Society of Waltham, Sons of Italy of Maynard and Concord.

Other forms of festivity to celebrate their Patron Saint, a large committee would arrange processions which marched from Russo's on Waltham Street to Rev. John A. Crowe Park, where many festivities took place in carnival fashion. At night some of the largest and best fireworks in the state were displayed for the gigantic crowd from Maynard and surrounding towns.

On other occasions the membership would motorcade with busses, and go on field trips to various Catholic Shrines and seminaries. Picnics and outings were held and still are held in the summer.

After many years of spiritual and festive activities the society is still active in many religious and community functions.

Maynard, Massachusetts - 1940. The combined Maynard, Mass. Finnish Bands. The "Imatra" and the "National" Bands.

"This was about the only time the two Finnish factions could get together and bury the hatchet somewhere else other than in each other's heads. They united in a common cause, to raise money for Finland in their fight with Russia in 1939-1940-1941. They travelled around to the various Finnish communities in the East and also went to NYC and Brooklyn for concerts. The conductor for these concerts was Tauno Hannikainen of the Helsinki Symphony and the Helsinki Grand Opera Co. He was one of a musical family of five brothers, a great exponent of Sibelius' music, and a marvelous all-around conductor. This was a much better sounding band than the 1926 one, ... mainly because the younger players ... were now older and had matured greatly as musicians, and this band had the best possible conductor.

I did not play with this group when they first formed for the 1939-1940 season, for two reasons: they already had six tubas as the picture shows, and I was just about a year at the tuba and felt a bit inexperienced. But when the 1940-1941 season rolled around, and they formed again, four of the six tubas dropped out, so I was in, and travelled to the various Finnish communities with them. It was a great experience playing under such a fine conductor, and the thrill of my young lifetime. At the time, the numbers they played seemed quite difficult to me as a beginner. Finlandia, Balse, Trist, William Tell Overture, Barber of Seville Overture, Artist's Life, Waltz of Strauss, Ballet Egyptian, etc. etc. I look back now and wind up chuckling for I can eat these numbers up quite easily now, but this is the stuff musicians and dreams are made of, and I am happy to have been a member of this great band, even if it was for only a short while.

Like any other band, there are always one or two "ringers" and this band was no exception. In the picture, second row on the extreme right, the first two clarinet players were from Quincy, and I believe they were Italians. I never got to know them or their names nor have ever seen them again, but they were marvelous players, both of them. About six or seven other men were from Fitchburg, Gardner, and Quincy, but otherwise the bulk of the band was from Maynard.

The tuba player third from the left in the back row had a son playing clarinet in the band who was probably as good as most of the other clarinet players. He must have been missing at the time for he is not in the picture. His name was Leo Luukkonen. They were from Quincy.

Tauno Hannikianen, the conductor, remained in this country for several years after this. He became conductor of the Duluth Minnesota Symphony and after a few years there, he went to Chicago Symphony where he was assistant leader under Arthur Rodzinski. This was as high as he got, and it was a pity he was never able to get a conductorship of a major symphony, for he was very much deserving of it."</text>

116th Infantry
29th Division

Born: Jul 26, 1917
Died: June 6, 1944

Vincent was 27 years old and had been overseas for two years.
Battle plans as of May 1944 listed Dog Company, 116th Infantry to be in the fifth landing wave at Omaha beach on D-Day,

A Sgt Slaughter of D Company recalled LT Labowicz as a damn fine officer. He thinks that Vincent made it ashore but was killed by machine gun fire on the beach. Sgt Slaughter stated that the long ride in from the troop ships had most everybody seasick and throwing up. He lay in the water for more than thirty minutes before attempting to run across the beach to the sea wall. He accidentally discharged his weapon, w'hich then became jammed. When he removed his jacket to clean his weapons, he was shocked to see that his jacket was in shreds, yet he was not wounded. He was killed in action in Normandy, France.
