Compared to the 1932 directories in our collection you can see the evolution of the business listings which is called "The Classified Telephone Directory" and the introduction of the phone company's role in helping you find "Where to Buy It when you wish to shop by telephone or personally".

<text>Prior to Maynard becoming a town in 1871, the land at 129 Parker Street, consisting of some 87 acres, was owned by Asa S. Balcolm of Sudbury, MA. The land stayed in Asa Balcolm's name until his death in 1920. His wife Mary Balcolm took over ownership until it was sold to Anna Salo (wife of John Salo) in 1923. When Anna Salo died, the land was probated, in 1937, to John Salo (5/15ths) and his five children William, Signe, Aune, Millie Simon, and Anna Renaud (2/15ths each). The land remained in its entirety until WWII when the federal government acquired some 25 acres for the ammunition storage depot. The remaining 62 acres stayed until a 4-acre parcel in the southeast corner was deeded to daughter Aune Koski in 1947; identified as 145 Parker Street. The remaining 58 acres continued as farmland until being sold to Atkins and Merrill Inc. in 1967. They later sold the 58-acre parcel to Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC Reality Trust) in 1971. DEC, through their successor Compaq Computer, later sold the parcel in 2000 to 129 Parker Street LLC. It was transferred to Parker Street Holdings LLC in 2011, then transferred to LSREF2 clover REO2 LLC also in 2011. Finally in 2015 it was sold to Maynard Crossings JV, LLC.

<text>John Salo was born in Finland on May 1, 1874. He came to America in 1892 to work in the Iron Mines in Michigan. His future wife Anna Ollila, born June 28, 1876, in Finland, came to America in 1894 also to live in Michigan. They were married on September 24,1898 in Ishpeming, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. It was known for its Iron Ore. John was a miner, and Anna was a domestic.

Their first child, a daughter, was Signe, born on July 9, 1899, in Michigan. Their second child, also a daughter, Millie, was born on April 2, 1901, in Michigan. The third child was William, born in Finland, on October 22, 1902. The fourth child was Anna E., born in Finland on May 11, 1904. Their fifth child was Aune R., born in Sudbury, MA, on August 1, 1915. When they came back from Finland around 1911, they lived on North Road in Sudbury.

John was a farmer. He acquired the land, known as 129 Parker Street, consisting of some 87 acres, from the Asa Balcolm family in 1923. His wife Anna died on December 13, 1933. She held the title to the land in her name; the land was distributed in 1937 as follows: John Salo 5/15ths, and all five children received 2/15ths each.

The farm continued with John, son William, daughter Millie Simons and her husband William Simons (born in Maynard on January 23, 1903). John Salo died on June 6, 1953, at age 79. William Simons died on June 10, 1964, at age 61. William Salo died on July 10, 1968, at age 66. Shortly thereafter, Atkins and Merrill agreed to acquire the land.

Millie continued to live in the home on the site under a lease agreement until she died on April 11, 1981, at age 80. The eldest child, Signe, died in February 1981. Anna Salo Renaud died on July 25, 1995; her husband Charles (born on May 11, 1903) died on January 18, 1992. The last child, Aune Salo Koski, died on April 29, 2012, at age 96. Her husband Birger “Rudy” Koski (born February 27, 1914) died on September 4, 1982, at age 68. Their daughter Sandra Koski Porter of Sudbury remains the only grandchild of John Salo still living in 2025. She has her own children and grandchildren.

In the 1950s it started as a small roadside stand, and it grew in size throughout the years to become a fully enclosed building in the 1960s, which sold many food and agricultural products. It continued into the 1970s, but then was sold to Digital Credit Union, who constructed a building on the site.

                <text>Signe Maria Salo:
Born in Ishpeming, Michigan on July 9, 1899. The family returned to Finland around 1902 and then returned to the U.S. in early 1911 to live on North Road in Sudbury. During the 1920s she worked as a domestic servant in Stow and Concord. She lived at 129 Parker Street in Maynard. In the 1930s she worked in Allenhurst, NJ and Darien, CT as a cook for private families. In the 1940s and 1950s she worked as a cook for a private family off East 65 Street in New York City. She continued to live in New York until her death in February 1981. She is buried on her sister Anna Renaud's grave plot in Southboro, MA.

Millie (Milja) Susanna Salo Simons:
Born on April 2, 1901, in Ishpeming, Michigan. The family returned to Finland around 1902 and then returned to the U.S. to live on North Road in Sudbury, in early 1911. In the 1920s she worked as a house cleaner at various locations. She lived at the family home at 129 Parker Street in Maynard. She married William “Little Bill” Simons (b. January 23, 1903) around 1930. They lived off Florida Road in Maynard. She continued house cleaning, and he worked as a weaver at the woolen mill. In the late 1940s they moved into 129 Parker Street. Her father, John, lived at 121 Parker Street, and her brother, Bill, lived at 125 Parker Street. They operated the farm during the 1950s and 1960s. Bill Simons passed away on June 10, 1964. She and her brother Bill continued the farm operation until the property was sold to Atkins and Merrill in 1967. She retained a lease on the family home until her death on April 11, 1981.

William J Salo:
Born on October 22, 1902, in Finland, he came here with family in 1911. He initially lived on North Rd in Sudbury with his family. He was known as “Big Bill” to family to differentiate him from his brother-in-law Bill Simons. In the 1920s he worked for the American Powder Company and continued into the 1940s as a truck driver. In the 1950s he worked for a box manufacturer as a truck driver. He also lived at the farm in his own building at 123 Parker Street and worked there as needed. It is believed that the house at 129 Parker Street was moved there from the American Powder Company. This happened after a fire in the original house. He died on July 10, 1968.

Anna Elizabeth Salo:
Born on May 11, 1904, in Finland. She moved here with family in 1911. She lived with her family on North Rd in Sudbury. She worked as a domestic in private homes. She married Charles Renaud (b. May 11, 1903) of Hudson in the 1920s. They had a son Robert Lewis (b. June 20, 1925). He died in WWII on April 7, 1945, on a B-17 plane during a mission over Germany. Charles died on January 18, 1992. Anna passed on July 25, 1995. They are buried in a family plot in Southboro.

Aune Regiina Salo:
Born on August 1, 1915, in Sudbury. After moving to 129 Parker Street in the 1920s, she attended Maynard Schools graduating in 1933. She attended Fitchburg State College graduating in 1937 with a teaching degree. She married Birger “Rudy” Koski (b. February 27, 1914) on September 7, 1937, in Greenville, NH. They lived in Fitchburg for a while until they built their home and farmstand in the late 1940s at 145 Parker Street. Aune was a bookkeeper and Rudy worked for United Co-op in the dairy. They had a daughter, Sandra (b. 1941) who had three children Kim (b. 1964), Danny (b. 1968) and Jimmy (b. 1970). Sandra lived in Sudbury.

May Procession
Musical Exercises Under Direction of Choir Master Hilferty

At the annual May Procession at St. Bridget's Church, at three o'clock, Sunday afternoon, more than two hundred children participated. The procession was formed in the basement of the church and marched up into the main auditorium, where the parade passed through the aisles in the following order: Walter Mullin, cross bearer; altar boys, Leo Fowler, William Dwyer, George Howes, Harold Kelly, Harold Powers, John Dewire, Edward Johnson, Winthrop Cuddy, Edward Murphy, Albert Riley, Frank Kane, and Matthew Powers.

These were followed by fifty girls clad in white dresses and long, flowing white veils; following the girls in white there were forty-five other girls and one hundred boys. The boys were followed by Miss Carolyn Hubert, who crowned the Queen of May. Miss Helen Morgan was Maid of Honor; Miss Maud Cowles and Miss Gertrude Murphy were flower bearers, all of whom were accompanied by Rev. Father Walter J. Browne. In this order the procession marched through the aisles of the church. After the children were seated, the five last mentioned took a position in front of the altar of the Blessed Virgin and crowned her "Queen of May". Rev. Walter J. Browne then read "The Act of Consecration", all of the children repeating. This was followed by the rosary and litany, after which Father Browne gave instructions, and this was followed by the Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

The musical part of the exercises were under the direction of Choir Master A. A. Hilferty. There were solos by Alice Crotty, who sang "On This Day, O Beautiful Mother"; Miss Irene O'Donnell sang "Glorious Mother". The choir sang the closing hymn, "To The Holy Name" written by Cardinal O'Connell. There was a very large congregation, and the exercises were conducted by Rev. Walter J. Browne.

<text>A stock certificate, number 13860, for 1 share of UCS stock issued to Arne Leino in 1953.

A brief biography of Arne by his niece, Karina Leino Thompson:

The certificate was owned by my uncle Arne Leino. He was born in 1916 and died in 1981. He never married. His father was Johannes Seven Karlsson (1886-1963). Johannes (my grandfather) changed his name from Karlsson to Leino when he emigrated through Ellis Island - because, according to family lore, Leino was a more Finnish name than Karlsson.

Arne's mother was Ida Junnikala (died in April, 1918 when Arne was two years old and just after the birth of his brother Matti in March, 1918). His parents were Finnish immigrants, ultimately settling on a farm in Harrison, Maine. This farm is still owned by the family. Arne and Matti (with their sister Helmi) were raised by my grandfather and his second wife, Hilda Kohtakangas (another Finnish immigrant by way of Canada). They had eleven more children.

Arne worked primarily as a forestry laborer. After his service in WWII, he traveled around various parts of New England working in the woods, felling trees for the wood industry. He lived in the Maynard in the mid-1950s, and also, I believe, in Littleton. He would visit his sister, my aunt Eila (Leino) Makey who married a second generation Finnish man from Stow -John Makey. John Makey was road commissioner in Stow for many years and involved with the Stow Historical Society.

A heavy smoker, my uncle Arne developed lung cancer, and died at the VA hospital in West Roxbury in 1981. He Is buried in the Lutheran/Finnish cemetery in Harrison, Maine.</text>

"Every nation has its own providential mission. In my opinion, Poland's mission was to be a chance for Faith and Christian civilization. The Polish Nation fulfilled its mission in the past, faithfully even in times of painful trials: Poland Forever Faithful." (i.e. Poland always faithful). I wish I could always fulfill! The greatness and the prosperity of this admirable nation are linked to the highest reason for its existence. F. Marmaggi Apostolic Nuncio

Ignacy Paderewski on the Role of the Catholic Church: "Most importantly, I believe that we should focus today on the Catholic Church, with which Poland is connected as closely as perhaps no other country. Through the Church, Poland was born as a serious contributor to the overall treasury of civilization and culture. Thanks to the Church, a strong and powerful state will be reborn, for only such a state can truly exist, never a weak one doomed to eternal internal struggles and exposed to constant attempts by enemies."

On the Occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of St. Casimir Parish in Maynard. May I be permitted to extend my heartfelt wishes for your continued flourishing and long life to you, esteemed priest, Father Doctor Miaskiewicz. And for you, dear compatriots, older residents who remember the joyful days of the establishment of St. Casimir's parish and the construction of the church, I wish that you may live to see the golden anniversary in good health and prosperity. We should be proud of fulfilling our duty towards God and our Homeland, and grateful to our Polish priests for their effort and work dedicated to the good of us and for the future of our children. I remember ... the late Father Jablonski, his carpenter work and various difficulties ... Father Dziok, whose effort led to the creation of our beautiful little church ... the kind figure of Father Maciaszek ... As one of the few remaining alive, I express our heartfelt gratitude here for our esteemed priests. You have won the love of our hearts with your affection for everything that is Polish and Catholic. Long live and may the parish of St. Casimir grow and thrive with our beloved parish priest, Rev. Dr. F. S. Miaskiewicz, D.C.L. at the helm. Jozef Arciszewski former president of the W.P.M.B. Częstochowa Society

The Role of the Church and the Pope of the Poles
Perhaps never before, as in the last dozen or so years, have various doubters with half-baked heads and evil hearts worked so hard and so much ugliness that they would not attribute to it. Understanding, with a well-formed conscience, good people do not believe this, because they can see what the Church does for them and what it is for them. Unstable, uncertain people in everything, people of bad character can sometimes be deceived by various opportunists and charlatans, who out of foolish pride and due to their bad life have abandoned the true Church of God established by Christ, and have founded some new "national" churches, placing the nation above God. For this is nonsense, everyone can see who still has a healthy sense of reason, for He did not create nations for God, but God created nations for Himself.

"It has been done by the Lord: and it is marvelous in our eyes" Ps. 117:23
Dearest in Christ the Lord:
The year 1912 has been honored in the Catholic life of Poles living abroad, as they organized themselves and began work on establishing a Polish parish, under the patronage of St. Casimir, the Prince. After the preparations, work began to transform and renew the building for the service of God, the Polish church. Although the first parish priest was Fr. Franciszek Jablonski, it fell to the hands of Fr. Jan S. Dziok to consecrate the church in 1928 for the glory of God.
St. Casimir Parish today celebrates the diamond jubilee. What a wonderful view presents itself to our eyes. His Excellency Archbishop Bernard Law, the most dignified arch pastor of this archdiocese, surrounded by priests, prelates, church dignitaries, and clergy, presides. His Excellency Cardinal Law celebrates a painless and bloodless Sacrifice of the Holy Mass, which is a reminder and renewal of the sacrifice on the cross of the Savior of humanity. The Word of God, the family hymn, still resounds in this magnificent sanctuary, and God willing, for many years to come, the parishioners here will worship, praise, and glorify Almighty God in the same language, and pray to Him for grace, mercy, compassion, and heavenly help in times of illness, distress, in bright, joyful moments as well as in life's failures and setbacks.
The anniversary of the parish is a triumph of the holy Church... it is a clear evidence of deep faith, faithful service to God and the Church. Today we express our humble and sincere gratitude and thanks to God.

The booklet contains photos of the five pastors, church groups, and various occasions. It also includes pictures of some of the families in the parish.

<text>Tom Sheridan served as the DPW Superintendent from 1975 to 1988.

A farewell party was held for Tom on January 29, 1988, in the lower level of the town building. A proclamation, issued by the selectmen, proclaiming January 29, 1988 as Thomas J. Sheridan Day, was read by Anne Flood, Chairperson of the Board of Selectmen. A poem written by family friend, Alice R. Hanson, was read by Alice. Tom spoke and thanked everyone for attending. The photo album was put together by DPW office clerks Rosemary O'Loughlin and Pat Coggins. A guest book was kept of all those in attendance.

The first photo shows the article announcing Tom's appointment, in the Beacon newspaper December 1974. Some of those pictured in the album are: Tom, wife Deb, and daughters Brooke and Mia, Anne Flood, Rick Hayes, George Shaw, Mike Gianotis, Joe Brooks, Lou Mula, Tom Lydon, Boika Helin, Bill Tobin, and Bob Gilligan.

The next picture shows (l-r) Tom Sheridan, Selectwoman Anne Flood (reading the proclamation), and Selectman George Shaw. Following that is the proclamation.
