The United Cooperative Society of Maynard has attracted nationwide attention. During the past five years many articles concerning it have appeared in various publications of nationwide circulation, and numerous visitors have continuously come in from all parts of the country to study the Society and its more conspicuous achievements. While an attempt has been made to help the visiting guests to gain a correct picture of the Society's functions, it's background, and sundry elements which have contributed it to its success, it is feared that this has not always been adequate. To overcome at least partially the possible deficiency in this respect, the present volume has been prepared.

The Finnish immigrants have pioneered in many lines of cooperative endeavor and made a significant contribution to the cooperative movement of North America. The complete story of this contribution is yet to be told to an American audience. The present volume is merely an effort to briefly cover the story of one small community where the Finnish population probably never exceeded 500 families.

Besides the Maynard cooperative the are at present in the United States of America something like 700 cooperatives, both large and small, and more across the border in Canada, which were founded by these people and are doing successful business in many states stretching from the East Coast clear across the country to the Pacific. These cooperatives operate in many lines of business. There are cooperative stores, bakeries, hotels and boarding houses; one large co-operative wholesale society; co-operative apartment houses; co-operative creameries and cheese factories; grain, feed and farm supply co-operatives; co-operative garages and auto service stations; co-operative slaughter houses and sausage factories; co-operative grain elevators, coal and lumberyards; marketing co-operatives for agriculture and forest products; fishermen's cold storage and marketing co-operatives, including salmon canneries on the west coast; agricultural machinery co-operatives in communities of small farmers; truck transport co-operatives; insurance, banking and credit co-operatives; rural electric and telephone co-operatives; health and burial associations; co-operative publishing associations, and co-operatives of many other kinds.

A large part of the text of this volume is based on information collected from the society's old Finnish records by Otto Fonsell, secretary of the Society for many years, and by Edward Helander. It was translated and edited by the Society's second-generation president, Charles W. Manty, and published five years ago in the 30th Anniversary Yearbook, which is now out of print. Additional information has been gathered from remaining available records and from the memories of some of the surviving pioneers. From among these, Alfred Torppa, Kalle Leivo and Pekka Pekkala have contributed significant information.

The writer is indebted to Dr. James Peter Warbasse and Mrs. Julia N. Perkins, both long-time friends of the Maynard Society, and their interest and encouragement in going over the manuscript and for their helpful suggestions, all of which are gratefully acknowledged.

<text>A stock certificate, number 13860, for 1 share of UCS stock issued to Arne Leino in 1953.

A brief biography of Arne by his niece, Karina Leino Thompson:

The certificate was owned by my uncle Arne Leino. He was born in 1916 and died in 1981. He never married. His father was Johannes Seven Karlsson (1886-1963). Johannes (my grandfather) changed his name from Karlsson to Leino when he emigrated through Ellis Island - because, according to family lore, Leino was a more Finnish name than Karlsson.

Arne's mother was Ida Junnikala (died in April, 1918 when Arne was two years old and just after the birth of his brother Matti in March, 1918). His parents were Finnish immigrants, ultimately settling on a farm in Harrison, Maine. This farm is still owned by the family. Arne and Matti (with their sister Helmi) were raised by my grandfather and his second wife, Hilda Kohtakangas (another Finnish immigrant by way of Canada). They had eleven more children.

Arne worked primarily as a forestry laborer. After his service in WWII, he traveled around various parts of New England working in the woods, felling trees for the wood industry. He lived in the Maynard in the mid-1950s, and also, I believe, in Littleton. He would visit his sister, my aunt Eila (Leino) Makey who married a second generation Finnish man from Stow -John Makey. John Makey was road commissioner in Stow for many years and involved with the Stow Historical Society.

A heavy smoker, my uncle Arne developed lung cancer, and died at the VA hospital in West Roxbury in 1981. He Is buried in the Lutheran/Finnish cemetery in Harrison, Maine.</text>

<text>The Inventory of the Town and City Archives of Massachusetts is one of a number of bibliographies of historical materials prepared throughout the United States by workers on the Historical Records Survey of the Work Projects Administration. The publication herewith presented, an inventory of the Archives of Maynard in Middlesex County, is volume XXIX of number 10 of the Massachusetts series.

The Historical Records Survey was undertaken in the winter of 1935-36 for the purpose of providing useful employment to needy unemployed historians, lawyers, teachers, and research and clerical workers. In carrying out this objective, the project was organized to compile inventories of historical materials, particularly the unpublished government documents and records which are basic in the administration of local government, and which provide invaluable data for students of political, economic, and social history. The archival guide herewith presented is intended to meet the requirements of day-to-day administration by town officials, and also the needs of lawyers, business men and other citizens who require facts from the public records for the proper conduct of their affairs. The volume is so designed that it can be used by the historian in his research in unprinted sources in the same way he uses the library card catalogue for printed sources.

The inventories produced by the Historical Records Survey attempt to do more than give merely a list of records -- they attempt further to sketch in the historical background of the county or other unit of government, and to describe precisely and in detail the organization and functions of the government agencies whose records they list. The county, town, and city inventories for the entire country will, when completed, constitute an encyclopedia of local government as well as bibliography of local archives.

The successful conclusion of the work of the Historical Records Survey, even in a single town, would not be possible without the support of public officials, historical and legal specialists, and many other groups in the community. Their cooperation is gratefully acknowledged.

The Survey directed by Luther H. Evans from its inception in January 1936 to March 1, 1940 when he was succeeded by Sargent B. Child formerly National Field Supervisor. It operates as a nation-wide project in the Division of Professional and Service Projects, of which Mrs. Florence Kerr, Assistant Commissioner, is in charge.

Monographs, by nature, are focused and detailed research on a single topic (places, people, events, etc.) Many of these monographs, especially by guest authors outside of the Society's research team, contain personal anecdotes and details of life in town during their lifetime.

In the years preceding the 1971 Centennial of Maynard the rather new Maynard Historical Society gathered a series of monographs on a wide variety of topics. 96 papers, written by primarily by Birger Koski and Ralph Sheridan, plus a number of "guest" authors, many of these were read at Historical Society meetings in the late 1960's and then became source material for the 1871-1971 History of Maynard book written for the Centennial of the Town. Monographs from that project are titled as a "Centennial Monograph",

<text> The first Danes to settle in Maynard came in the early l890's. By 1899 they were numerous enough to have organized a club and to hold a dance in their clubroom on Acton Street. That same year rellgious services were held in the Union Congregational Church. The following year a new pastor arrived and by 1901 the church had forty communicants. The young Danes organized a club in 1903 known as the young Danish Peoples' Social Club.

Danish Brotherhood Society, Maynard Lodge No. 204, was instituted December 23, 1904. This was a fraternal benefit society which lasted until 1929. The society built a hall on Hastings Street, Stow, just over the town line in 1912. There is no record of the first officers, but Hans Erikson was on of the stalwarts in the latter years of the society.

The Swedes started to settle in Maynard around the turn of the century. By 1904, a Sunday School was organized at the home of John Nordberg. Sometime just before 1913 the Hamer Lodge, No. 126, Scandinavian Brotherhood was organized. In its ranks were also Danes and Norwegians and at it peak had a membership of about one hundred and forty. In the latter 1930's it combined with the Lindberg Lodge of Waltham. Some of the early officers were Charles E. Ekstadt, Sanfrld Swanson, Carl Emanuelson, Mrs. Bemt Anderson, Mrs. Hudda McClean, Rlchard Swanson, Bemt Anderson, Ernest Johnson, Oscar Johnson. Religious services by 1913 were held by the Swedish Lutheran Congregation in the vestry of the Finnish Lutheran Church.

Norwegians in limited numbers entered Maynard life about the same time as the Danes and the Swedes. They apparently joined in the soclal life of the above in their organizations as there is no record of any Norwegian societies.
