<text>Transcription of the section about the Salo Lodge, Maynard ( pgs. 128 & 129 ):

" SALO LODGE NUMBER 138 ( MAYNARD, MASSACHUSETTS )

Salo Lodge Number 138 was founded April 11, 1915 in a small but active village where Finnish immigrants had settled already in the last century. There were as many as 2000 Finns living in the village. The lodge was founded by a group of fourteen Finns. John Nokelainen , Edward Hintsa, Antti Heiskari and Weeti Taival were some of the long term members who joined the lodge in the beginning; later, the following members enrolled: George Hekkala, Teuvo Grekula, Matti Nelson, Niilo Keto, Lauri Wick, Leo Weckstrom, Pastor Reino Hiironen, Olavi Alatalo, Edwin Sarvela, Paul Koski and Veijo Epailys.

At the start, the operation of the lodge remained ideologically close to that of the Knighthood, but gradually its features began to resemble modern times. The lodge bought a Kaleva Home and a villa by a lake in 1921. The villa is beautiful with 16 acres of land and 22 small beautiful houses, which are owned by the members. Many parties have been organized there, and since the villa is located only 6 miles from town, it is easy to get to. The villa has been enlarged, and nowadays it is used as a meeting location.

In 1932, Salo Lodge and the women's Salotar Lodge together purchased a house in the town center. With some minor repairs it became an excellent meeting location. Although the house was not large, it meet the needs of the membership. The house was later sold, and in the early 1980's a more suitable building was purchased. It was a great coincidence that just when the house was ready for use, the lodge was revisited by Grand First Brother Alfons Ukkonen who had been here previously with his wife at the summer party 1960. With them came the opera singer Kalle Ruusunen and his wife. The party was excellent, and it gave the members much enthusiasm.

The members in Maynard have organized many great anniversaries. They have always taken national holidays and their own anniversaries into account, and made contributions, especially when the Finnish Relief Fund was in operation. Summer camps have been held annually at the lodge's villa, as has a midsummer's party. The ceremonies of the villa have often included a "road race" in which local amateurs have taken part. In some cases, it has been a stepping stone to sports.

Nether Salo Lodge nor Salotar Lodge have organized a Grand Convention. In 1977, however, they held an Interim Meeting where Grand Puukka, Henry Hakanen, Robert Erickson, Tauno Rauhala, Tauno Nurmi, Leo Weckstrom, and Eino Haapanen, who represented the 6th Degree members. Grand Assessor Toivo Nevala planned to attend the meeting, but he had learned about the death of his mother and cancelled. Matti Hekkala was appointed to the Grand Lodge in 1920, Leon Weckstrom in 1978, and Veijo Epailys in 1990, who was reappointed in 1992 and 1994. The lodge has not been represented in the Grand Lodge very well. This is strange because the lodge's operation has otherwise been exemplary.

In October 1933, a Young Member's Friendship Association was established. Its operation was vey active. On February 20, 1940, the young members received a charter, which was presented at a special event. The association was named "Young Members of Kaleva." Meetings where held every week led by Matti Nelson, and Roosa Grekula; Mr. and Mrs. Eino Eklund acted as the assistants. The operation continued for a long time under the name "Hyva Heimo" ("Good Tribe"). "</text>

<text>A 16 mm film taken in 1921 during and after the Fiftieth Anniversary celebration of the founding of the Town of Maynard. 1921 was a big year in Maynard. Mr. Samuel Lerer, member of the Board of Selectmen and prominent businessman had a moving picture theatre in Riverside Hall (above Gruber Furniture) and he had a film made of many people, places and events during the celebration. This film was shown annually at the People's Theatre on Nason St.. Burton Coughlin ran the Peoples' until 1949 when he built the Fine Arts Theatre on Summer St. in what was his father's former livery stable and garage. The film became very dilapidated and he salvaged what he could and had it made into a new film which he presented to the MHS, where it has been shown only on special occasions.</text>

<text>An original chair from the "Brick School" on Summer St. The building is still standing but has undergone changes.

The Town of Stow on March 3, 1766 voted to build three school houses in the outlying districts and there is no doubt that this building was one of them for the record of the school committee chosen December 17, 1789 for the "Northeast Corner" district were Luke Brooks(1), John Marble and Capt. Sargent, all residents of the district. It was afterwards called District No.5 and so designated until the Town of Maynard was incorporated. The school lot is said to have been given by Mr. Randall. The old "Brick School" was closed in 1872, having worthily served its purpose for over 100 years, many of our honored citizens receiving all the schooling they ever had within its walls.
From the map of 1830 -- District No. 5, on back road to "Assbet Village" (used for a dwelling; lower part brick; upper wood.)
Among its pupils were numbered - Ezekiel Brown, his son George; Mrs. Joel Abbot, her son Charles; Georgia Smith Brown; Thomas Brooks, son of Luke; Mrs. J.W. Reed; Artemas and John Whitney; George and Charles Maynard; Lorenzo and William Maynard; and their children; Thomas Hillis, the Fowlers, Bents, Parmenters and many others. Also, William H. Gutteridge, who in 1921 authored and published "A Brief History of the Town of Maynard".</text>

Used by George E. White, who owned and operated a cigar manufacturing shop in the basement of Masonic Block, Main Street, from 1916 to 1922, and made such brands as "Middlesex"- 10 cents - and "Captor"-5 cents.

John W. Connors in 1900 was making cigars in his factory in Loew's Block (now the Pizza House) on Nason Street. He made the "J.W.C" and "Forester" and the "Home Market Club". Cornelius J. Lynch bought out Mr. Connors in 1910 and due to the increase in business moved the location to the Masonic Block, Main Street. He produced the 'Middlesex" and "Captor". Mr. George E. White purchased the business in 1916 and sold it to William Irwin in 1922, who operated the shop for a few years. Mr. Irwin had been making cigars in Maynard since the 1880's. </text>

<text>These were the property of J. Leo Comeau, who was the last of the icemen to make deliveries in town. He delivered ice right up to the day he was stricken in May 1965. He used the apron when carrying the ice.

In 1849 when the Marlboro Branch of the railroad was completed, a large ice house was erected by N.J. Wyeth where the Front Street houses now stand. It was of brick construction and held 40,000 tons of ice which was cut on the mill pond and shipped to Boston. About 1864 it ceased to be used, and the Assabet Mfg. Co. purchased and tore down the building, using the brick for mill construction. The granite arch and keystone may be seen over the door of No.12 mill near Main Street. Until early 1930's ice was cut on the Assabet River just above the 'Ben Smith Dam" and above "Russell's Bridge". It was stored in houses located across the tracks from the town pumping station and also on the Stow side of the road near the bridge. J.R. Bent and later C.C. Murray and finally John Zaniewski cut above the dam. W.O. Strout and J. Leo Comeau cut above Russells Bridge. Both houses have since been destroyed by fire. Mr. Comeau, until a few years ago, cut ice in West Concord and later purchased ice in East Acton. For the past few years has purchased artificial ice from Lowell, making the trip daily to and from Lowell and delivering the ice in Maynard.

This piece of cloth was last owned by William H. Gutteridge. Mr. Gutteridge came to Maynard in 1863, although his parents Robet Gutteridge and Mary Wood worked here in 1847 before their marriage. Mary boarded with Mr. Maynard and wound the first bobbin in the Assabet Mill. Robert was a carpet weaver, and after their marriage went to Freemont, New York where their children were born. William went to work as office boy for the Assabet Manufacturing Company, and in 1882 became paymaster, a position he held until the mill failed in 1898. When the American Woolen Company took over he continued in their employ as paymaster until his retirement. His son George was a close chum of Lorenzo Malynard, who gave this piece of carpet to the Gutteridges. It was found by the Allens when cleaning out the Gutteridges house after George had died.</text>

This building was completely destroyed by fire on the morning of Dec. 17,1952. The site is now occupied by our Town Building and Library, which was dedicated on Sunday, July 29, 1962</text>

The usual equipment of a Victorian barber shop was a single green upholstered tonsorial throne, a row of chairs along the wall, perphaps an old leather couch, and cuspidors a-plenty for waiting patrons. Barber shop air was redolent of Bay Rum. On a shelf near the barber's hand stood slender bottles, perhaps adorned with roseate pictures of popular actresses: red bottles for bay rum, blue for witch hazel, and white for water. But the most enliving feature of the place was a black-walnut cabinet divided into small cubicles which held the customers' decorated mugs, each emblazoned in gold letters with the name of its owner. These mugs were tantamont to a business directory of the locality, for many of them, in addition to carrying the owner's name, bore some gaily painted and obvious symbol of his occupation, such as fireman, sportsman, flags of the fatherland, boats,etc... Most of these mugs were used by the individual owner, some by an entire family, and occasionally a single mug would be used by the members of some one society or club.</text>
