Monographs, by nature, are focused and detailed research on a single topic (places, people, events, etc.) Many of these monographs, especially by guest authors outside of the Society's research team, contain personal anecdotes and details of life in town during their lifetime.

In the years preceding the 1971 Centennial of Maynard the rather new Maynard Historical Society gathered a series of monographs on a wide variety of topics. 96 papers, written by primarily by Birger Koski and Ralph Sheridan, plus a number of "guest" authors, many of these were read at Historical Society meetings in the late 1960's and then became source material for the 1871-1971 History of Maynard book written for the Centennial of the Town. Monographs from that project are titled as a "Centennial Monograph",

              <text>Account #1: St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church

In 1905, the Polish people of Catholic faith began using the lower church at St. Bridget's for their services. By 1910, there were about six hundred Polish-speaking people in Maynard, most of whom were attending St. Bridget's, and Rev. Walter A. Browne, pastor of St. Bridget's asked Archbishop O'Connell to provide a Polish priest as an assistant. Sunday, December 8, 1912, Rev. Francis Jablonski of Boston, administrator for the Polish-speaking people of Maynard, said his first mass at St. Bridget's Church at 10:30 a.m. Fr. Jablonski began immediately looking around for a suitable place to erect a church. The name of St. Casimir, patron saint of the Polish people, was chosen for the parish.
In the middle 1920s, they purchased land formerly owned and occupied by the Concord, Maynard and Hudson Street Railway on Great Road and converted the powerhouse into the present beautiful St. Casimir's Church. The church was blessed on November 12, 1928, by the Rt. Rev. Richard Haberlin as personal representative of His Eminence William Cardinal O'Connell.
Fr. Jablonski served from 1912 to 1926; followed by Rev. John S. Dziok, 1926 to 1939; Rev. William F. Maciaszek, 1939 to 1945; and Rev. Francis S. Miaskiewicz, D. C. L., 1945 until his death on January 10, 1970. Rev. Louis Bilicky was named pastor in February 1970. The parish rectory is at 253 Main Street, being purchased in 1937.

Account #2: The Polish People of St. Bridget's

In 1905, due to the steady growth of Polish people in Maynard, permission was granted to them to use the lower church of St. Bridget's for giving services. By 1910, some six hundred Poles resided in town, and through the intercession of Fr. Walter A. Browne, Pastor of St. Bridget's, His Eminence William Cardinal O'Connell assigned a Polish-speaking priest to care spiritually for the Polish people.
On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1912, the Rev. Francis Jablonski, the first Polish-speaking priest in Maynard, celebrated mass at St. Bridget's. They continued to use the lower church.
In December 1926, Rev. John S. Dziok (who was later appointed a Monsignor) was assigned to Maynard to succeed Fr. Jablonski. During his pastorship the power station and land formerly owned and occupied by the Concord, Maynard and Hudson Street Railway on Great Road was acquired. The hardy and faithful parishioners by the sacrifices of time, energy, and sweat of the brow remodeled the building into the now beautiful "House of God", known as St. Casimir's Church. On November 12, 1928, the church of St. Casimir's was blessed by Monsignor Richard Haberlin. In 1937, the rectory at 253 Main Street was purchased.

<text>John Salo was born in Finland on May 1, 1874. He came to America in 1892 to work in the Iron Mines in Michigan. His future wife Anna Ollila, born June 28, 1876, in Finland, came to America in 1894 also to live in Michigan. They were married on September 24,1898 in Ishpeming, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. It was known for its Iron Ore. John was a miner, and Anna was a domestic.

Their first child, a daughter, was Signe, born on July 9, 1899, in Michigan. Their second child, also a daughter, Millie, was born on April 2, 1901, in Michigan. The third child was William, born in Finland, on October 22, 1902. The fourth child was Anna E., born in Finland on May 11, 1904. Their fifth child was Aune R., born in Sudbury, MA, on August 1, 1915. When they came back from Finland around 1911, they lived on North Road in Sudbury.

John was a farmer. He acquired the land, known as 129 Parker Street, consisting of some 87 acres, from the Asa Balcolm family in 1923. His wife Anna died on December 13, 1933. She held the title to the land in her name; the land was distributed in 1937 as follows: John Salo 5/15ths, and all five children received 2/15ths each.

The farm continued with John, son William, daughter Millie Simons and her husband William Simons (born in Maynard on January 23, 1903). John Salo died on June 6, 1953, at age 79. William Simons died on June 10, 1964, at age 61. William Salo died on July 10, 1968, at age 66. Shortly thereafter, Atkins and Merrill agreed to acquire the land.

Millie continued to live in the home on the site under a lease agreement until she died on April 11, 1981, at age 80. The eldest child, Signe, died in February 1981. Anna Salo Renaud died on July 25, 1995; her husband Charles (born on May 11, 1903) died on January 18, 1992. The last child, Aune Salo Koski, died on April 29, 2012, at age 96. Her husband Birger “Rudy” Koski (born February 27, 1914) died on September 4, 1982, at age 68. Their daughter Sandra Koski Porter of Sudbury remains the only grandchild of John Salo still living in 2025. She has her own children and grandchildren.

ODD FELLOWS

The Lincoln Library of Essential Information imparts this knowledge -to us of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows:
"A Secret, Fraternal, Beneficiary Society, founded in England sometime during the second quarter of the 18th Century. A Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows for England was formed at London in 1803. In 1809 a subordinate Lodge at Manchester, successfully declared itself independent of the Grand Lodge, and, as the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Manchester Unity, constitutes today the large st English branch of the Order.

Thomas Wildey is considered to have been the founder of the Society in America , although other Lodges are known to have existed before Wildey came to the United States. In 1819, Willdey and other English associates organized a Lodge of Odd Fellows in Baltimore, which received a charter from the Manchester Unity. In 1813, the American order declared its independence of the older society. Three degrees are conferred in Lodges of Odd Fellows. Those who have received the third degree are eligible to membership in an encampment, where three further degrees are conferred. A uniformed degree of the order, known as the Patriarchs Militant, is open only to those who have received the Royal Purple Degree of an encampment. The Rebekah degree for women members was established in 1851,"

As the above in dicates , there were three distinct orders of Odd Fellows - the original order in London, the Manchester Unity and the American . In Maynard we had two lodges, one affiliated with the Manchester Unity and the other with the American Order. Gutteridge's History informs us that Loyal Assabet Lodge, I,0,0, F Manchester Unity was instituted January 17, 1884 and two and a half months later
on April 2, 1884m the Maynard Lodge, I.0,0,F. of t he American Orcler was or organized,

The reasons are obscure why the need for two lodges. Possibly the people of English descent wanted the Manchester Unity and the Scotch and other nationalities wanted no part of it.
