Description
On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 21, 1938 New England was struck by the first hurricane in more than 100 years. It lasted from about 5 PM until 8 PM. Maynard was in chaotic conditioned unparalleled in history. Electric power was off, telephones out of commission, 487 trees blown down - 329 on public streets, 81 on private houses and garages. The fire alarm system was badly damaged but there was no loss of life. Maynard municipal expense was $11,490.62.
