Description

Jaakko Rinta was the minister of the Finnish Mission Congregational Church between 1932 and 1936.

Jaakko was born December 10, 1903 in Nurmo, Finland.

Following is early schooling he made his decision to further his education in the field of religious studies. In 1928 he was ordained by the free Church of Finland. He served parishes at West Paris, Maine; Maynard and Worcester, Massachusetts, before coming to Portland, Oregon in 1936 as pastor of the Finnish Mission Congregational Church.

In 1939 he became a U.S. citizen. He was pastor for the Finnish Congregational Church in Astoria, Oregon from 1951 to 1953, and then became Pastor at large serving churches in the Hockinson, Kelso, Winlock and Issaquah. He returned to the area in 1962 and served the Peace and United Church in Portland until his retirement in 1978 on the 50th anniversary of his ordination.

For many years he was editor of the Finnish religious monthly "Palvelija - The Servant". In 1946 he joined the Finnish Brothers and Sisters Portland Lodge #23. He was a charter member of the Finnish-American Historical Society of the West and took part in the activities of other Finnish groups as speaker and lecturer.

Rev. Rinta died on September 13, 1980 in Vancouver, Washington.
