Title

Maynard High School Football Game - 1961

Description

A black and white photo showing a group of Maynard High School football fans at the Thanksgiving Game against Clinton High School, held in Clinton, MA.

The date was Thursday, Nov. 23, 1961; the score was Maynard 30 & Clinton 9.

After we posted this photograph on our Facebook page we learned that this was not an entirely random set of fans. These were sometimes known as the "Red Door Originals"

The man in front with the checkered coat is Billy Skirton. We suspect that Bill's cup had ginger brandy in it (his favorite drink).

The woman to the right of him in the photo is Annie Skirton, his mother and known to Red Door patrons as "Ma". Together with son Billy and her husband Vincent they owned the Red Door Cafe on Main Street. When the Skirtons originally purchased the business the Red Door was a well-known establishment located in the vicinity of Main and Nason Streets along with a bowling alley. (This location eventually became the Copper Kettle restaurant until it was replaced by the "Maynard Mall" and then the CVS building.) The Red Door eventually moved to its location at 157 Main Street. Both locations were popular with the Mill workers.

To Ma's right is Byron “Whizzer” White. He received that nickname after a famous football player and Supreme Court justice.

The man in the rear with his hand raised is Albert "Pinky" Tomyl. Below his raised arm is his companion Jackie Osborne.
