aboard the B-17 Flying Fortress.
He had a brief furlough at his home on Acton Street in May 1943, then reported to the 304th Bomb Squadron at Drew Field, Tampa, Florida.
George was MIA over Germany, and buried in the Netherlands.
George's father Deane, was the first World War II veteran to join the American Legion after being discharged upon reaching age 38.
The portrait is on display in the Maynard Veterans' Wall of Honor in the Soup Campbell Room, Lower Level of Maynard Town Hall.
