Birger Koski of the Maynard Historical Society submitted to our office this week a poem in tribute to William J. Salo.
WILLIAM J. SALO 1903 -1968
In Maynard Town an age has passed.
Age? This is endless?
Nevertheless ...
An age has passed.
The age of nevermore ..
Of field of rye, clover, farm,
Born, stock ... of sleigh,
wagon, plough and lumber.
This was his age.
Whose age?
Brother Bill of course ...
That's how we all knew him.
For forty years he was known --
Strongest man in town --
Two hundred fifty pounds of muscle,
Willing to swap muscle for
Muscle in contest.
And heart to heart in feeling
He gave his wealth of knowledge and goods of olden days
Memorabilia -- in full amount
Brother Bill -- You sensed what
You were doing for posterity.
