Middlesex County National Bank Open House - 1952

Description

An excerpt from the "History of Maynard, Massachusetts 1871-1971" by the Maynard Historical Committee (pg. 56): "In June 1913, the subscribers for the Maynard Trust Company voted to locate in Naylor's Block, Main Street, in part of the building which [was then] occupied by F. W. Woolworth Company. On November 24, 1913, the bank was officially opened with George H. Creighton, President, H. J. Dwinell, Vice-President, and Charles E. Wheeler, Treasurer. On October 15, 1925, land was purchased from the Naylors to build a new bank building on Main Street, which was occupied in May 1926. On March 1, [1947], the [Maynard Trust] Company merged with the Middlesex County National Bank."

The Middlesex County National Bank (MCNB) completed extensive renovations of the Maynard Trust Company Building at 81 Main Street in early 1952, and a house-warming celebration, for bank staff and their friends, was held on January 29. According to the Maynard Enterprise, January 31 (pgs. 1 and 4), "The completion of an extensive program of remodeling and redecoration at the Maynard Office of the Middlesex County National Bank has been announced by Oliver T. Bergstrom, President.

"Members of the bank's staff and their friends were guests of the management at a house-warming Tuesday evening and had an opportunity to inspect the facilities which now provide Maynard and vicinity with one of the most beautiful and modern banking quarters in this area.

"Modernization of this office has been accomplished in keeping with the very latest expression of the architects' and decorators' art, and offers unusual convenience and efficiency for the transaction of banking business. The bank's personnel will also enjoy improved working conditions under which they will be able to render even better service to the institution's many customers in this area.

"The outmoded tellers' cages have been eliminated, and are replaced by a modern counter, which now occupies the lefthand side of the banking floor instead of being on the right as formerly. At the right of the entrance is a new officers' section, separated from the main floor by a mahogany railing, planned in accordance with modern bank design to allow closer contact between patrons and officers, while retaining the privacy essential to confidential business. A new rug in this section adds to the friendly, homelike atmosphere.

" To the right rear, a small conference room has been provided, as well as a room for use of the Board of Managers. Bookkeeping activities, formerly on the street level, have been moved to the second floor. Modern fluorescent lighting provides adequate illumination without glare or harshness.

"The entire interior has been redecorated in rose-peach and mahogany, with blue-green window drapes contributing to the general effect of cheerfulness. Dark mahogany woodwork throughout blends harmoniously into the color scheme.

"Operations of the Maynard Office are under the direction of a local Board of Managers made up of James J. Ledgard, Chairman, Guyer W. Fowler, and Philip A. Wilson. Officers in charge are Medville L. Clark, Vice-President, and Albert N. Hodgess, Assistant Cashier.

"On the office staff are Mary U. Dunn, Helen O'Buck, Mary G. Sweeney, Mary E. McCarthy, Julie A. Palima, Joan E. LeSage, Isabel A. Doran, Carol B. Novick, John E. Johnson, Rita F. LeSage, Dorothy Cantin, and Peter H. Schultz.

"Organized in 1913 as Maynard Trust Company, this bank joined the Middlesex County National Bank by merger in 1947. It serves a substantial number of depositors and customers in Maynard and the surrounding communities of Nashoba Valley. Retaining the atmosphere and friendly personal relationships of a local bank, the Maynard Office offers complete facilities for all types of banking service, including checking accounts, Thrifti-Check accounts, business loans, mortgage loans, home improvement loans, personal loans, automobile and appliance financing, safe deposit boxes, Christmas Club, and many others. Resources of the parent institution, which serves Middlesex County through 14 offices in 10 communities, now total $88, 000,000."
