Title
John H. Vose School Bell
Description
This bell was used by Mr. John H. Vose, a teacher at the Garfield Intermediate School on Sudbury Street, to call the pupils into school. Purchased at an auction of the Vose property in the early 1900's by Mrs. James Sheridan, Sr. It was used by the Town Clerk, Frank E. Sanderson, at the Town Meeting held in Riverside Hall on April 19, 1921, when celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Town of Maynard.
The bell was donated to the Superintendant of Schools in 1947 by Miss M. Eleanor Sheridan of Maynard.
Mr. John Vose was a member of the Maynard School Committee for several years. He was caretaker and part-time teacher at the Turnpike School, located on Great Road. This school was abandoned in 1881 and a new school known as the Garfield Intermediate School was built on the corner of Sudbury St. and Great Rd. The cost to build the school was $4,453.51. Mr. Vose was appointed teacher at a salary of $10.00 a week, with 54 pupils under his care.
