Title
Maynard Fire Department "Jaws of Life"
Description
A black and white photo of Maynard Fire Fighter, Ted Clancy, using the Jaws of Life.
Firefighter Ted Clancy with Jaws of LIfe, Firefighter Gerry Byrne in knit cap, Firefighter Bob Loomer behind Gerry.
The Hurst Rescue Tool (colloquially known as the "Jaws of Life") was invented by George Hurst, circa 1961, after he viewed a stock car race accident in which it took workers over an hour to remove an injured driver from his car. The tool uses hydraulic pressure to separate or spread the arms after they are inserted into the space the rescuers need access to.
