Title

Assabet Mills Carpet

Description

Possibly a piece of early carpet manufactured in Assabet Mills in 1847. The cloth was preserved and handed down through the Maynard family. It was last owned by William Gutteridge, author of "A Brief History of Maynard, Mass. - 1921". William Gutteridge started as an office boy at the Assabet Mills when Amory Maynard was the Agent for the Assabet Mfg. Company. He later became the Paymaster for the mill, a position he held through the Assabet Mfg. Co. bankruptcy in 1898 then for the American Woolen Company. Lorenzo Maynard, son of Amory Maynard, gave the cloth to the Gutteridges.
