Title

Teacher's Hand Bell - 1857
Used in the old "Main Street School"

Description

The old Main Street School was built in 1857 on a lot of 32 rods purchased from Amory Maynard for $208. The Town of Sudbury also voted "that the committee might borrow $300 in addition to the $1000 granted, if necessary to build the school house at Assabet". This building survived until 1903 when it was sold and moved to the rear of the James Mullin residence, and a modern brick structure erected on its site, additional land being purchased for increased playgrounds. This building was completely destroyed by fire on the morning of Dec. 17,1952. The site is now occupied by our Town Building and Library, which was dedicated on Sunday, July 29, 1962
