Millpond Picture
Description
A picture of the Millpond. In order to make the river a more stable source of power, Amory Maynard bought from Haman Smith a strip of land connecting the river to the mill area. Artemus Whitney, a close associate of Maynard's, dug a canal that led the water to what was then a low, swampy hollow with a trout brook running through it. Whitney cleared the land and built a temporary earth dam that allowed water into the millpond by way of the canal. This picture shows logs floating in the pond, waiting to be milled for constructuing the mill buildings.
