Title
Harriman Brothers New Method Laundry - early 1900's
Description
In 1890 Frank H. and Rowland F. Harriman started a laundry in two small rooms in the J. K. Harriman Building at the corner of Main St. and Harriman Court. J. K. Harriman, father of the two brothers, was one of the pioneer businessmen in the village and served as the Post Master from 1862 to 1866. The building at the time the laundry was established had a grocery, barber shop, photography studio, cigar store, two tenements and a hall. Eventually the laundry absorbed the entire building. In 1903, with 75 employees, was second only to the woolen mill as an employer. In 1909 the business was sold to Richard Russell and Jeremiah O'Neil and moved to Hudson. In less than a year the new owners went out of business.
