Al Greeno Biography 1923-2011
Description
Al Greeno was born as Albert Henry Greeno in 1923. He was the son of Dominick and Jennarose (Russo) Greeno. He was one of 15 children born and raised on Harrison Street in Maynard. He graduated from Maynard High School in 1942. He was voted the best singer in his class. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.
He returned to work for the Maynard School System in 1948. He started as the custodian at the Roosevelt School. He completed his career as Head Custodian for all the schools in 1978 - a 30-year career. Those who attended the Roosevelt School always considered "Mr. Greeno" the real school principal. When a student was given the direction to go see Mr. Greeno in the boiler room, they knew that they were in trouble.
He married Phyllis Sue Wade in 1961. They had a son, Jonathan, who along with his Carol, had a daughter named Sydney Ellen. Sydney Ellen was Al's granddaughter, his pride and joy. After retiring, he spent the next 33 years enjoying life. He was always available to help people and tell one of his many jokes. He loved telling old Maynard stories of growing up here. A true Maynard character.
He returned to the Roosevelt School for the grand opening of the new Maynard Public Library on July 17, 2006. He was well received by former students and teachers. He had a story about mostly everyone. He passed away on June 18, 2011, at his house. A life well lived.
