Title
William McGarry's "Hippodrome"
Description
A series of newspaper articles about McGarry's Hippodrome, some dated 1933. The Hippodrome hosted amateur wrestling matches. The "Hippodrome" was named as such by a private club of boys in Bill McGarry's barn in Nason Street, Maynard. These matches in the "Hippodrome" occurred every Monday night and were hosted by the Turks Sporting Club. The cost to attend was a nickel! Dick Elson was the Secretary for the Turks Sporting Club at that time.
While a number of wrestling articles speak of a Fitchburg wrestling hall, names of Maynard fighters are included. Those names are: Lauri Kauppi, Robert McGarry, Eugene Jokisaari, Eric Wattu, John Malcolm, Edwin Williams, John Murphy, Albert Kauppi, and Harold Lerer.
