Title
Removal of the Mission Evangelical Church Bell (aka Curfew Bell)
Description
A series of photographs documenting the removal of the bell from the belfry of the Mission Evangelical Congregational Church. This bell was donated to the then Finnish Congregational Church in 1935 by the Mill, where it was used as a 9pm "curfew signal" to Mill workers.
In anticipation of Maynard's Sesquicentennial anniversary in 2021, the Maynard Historical Commission (MHC) worked with the trustees of the Mission Evangelical (Finnish) Congregational) Church on Walnut St. to retrieve the church's bell from the tower. The bell has been gifted to the town for its Sesquicentennial. As part of a Community Historical Preservation Grant the MHC arranged a rigging company to remove the bell and store it until a permanent visible location in town can be prepared. The Town's DPW department will prepare an enclosure where the bell will rest with a plaque dedicating the bell to the town for its sesquicentennial and a short history of the bell.
