Title
H. H. Scott Model 314 Tuner
Description
This is a working (as of 2026) Model 314 - Wide-Band Monophonic FM Tuner manufactured by the H. H. Scott Company (on Powdermill Road)
The term "wide-band" referred to the tuner's ability to handle the wider frequency fluctuations (bands) used by commercial FM radio (compared to, for example, police radios or walkie-talkies). This "frequency modulation" (FM) technique provided higher audio fidelity.
Commercial FM radio at that time had introduced stereo signals and Scott sold stereo tuners (Model 330D) but the Model 314 traded that ability for lower cost (hence the "monophonic" part of its title).
This is not a solid-state (transistorized) audio component, it contained 7 vacuum tubes.
The Model 314 replaced the 311 series, and made further cost reductions by eliminating the 12AU7 audio amplifier tube. The 6AU6 limiter tube was replaced with a 6U8, the triode section serving as the audio amplifier. The tuning meter used in the earlier Scott tuners was also eliminated, and replaced by a "magic eye" tube. The tuner also had a wider chassis that was used by most other Scott tuners.
The Scott Model LT-10 monophonic tuner kit was essentially the Model 314 tuner in kit form, with a tuning meter in place of the tuning eye.
In a 1961 price sheet Scott listed the Model 314 for $114.95
