Spikes from the Boston & Maine RR, Marlboro Branch of the Fitchburg Division in Maynard.
Originally chartered as the Lancaster & Sterling R. R. On Monday after Thanksgiving in Dec 1848 work commenced on the gravel pit at "Brooks Crossing" now Summer St. crossing. The man who ran his shovel into the earth to make the first excavation was Michael Sweeney. The first passenger train to Marlboro ran in July 1850. As many as 24 trains a day ran through the village. Passenger service discontinued beyond Maynard in April 1939, freight service shortly afterwards. The last passenger train in and out of Maynard to South Acton was on the evening of May 16, 1958. In 1977 the tracks were removed.
