Maynard High School at Mt. Vernon - Class of 1916

For several years the senior class of the high school was allowed to take a trip during the spring vacation. They left by train on Friday and went to Boston then Providence, RI. Boarded a boat for an overnight cruise to New York City where they boarded a train to Philadelphia and toured the city. Went to Washington , D.C. staying at the National Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue. The return trip was a train to New York City and the boat back to Providence. Returned to Maynard via the train by Friday afternoon.
The class of 1916 was the last to make the trip to Washington. World War I involved the United States in 1917 and everything was being put into the war effort. The idea was not undertaken again.
