Title
(Great) Northern Recording Studio
Description
This is a photo likely taken in the (Great) Northern Studio, located on the second floor of 63 Main Street (Woolworth's building) probably in the mid-70s.
The studio was founded in the 1970s by Boston's Peter Casperson and artist manager Bob Runstein . The studio closed and the space was acquired by Bill Riseman who opened the studio in 1976 as "Northern Studios". David 'db' Butler then joined the staff. The 1977-1978 Billboard Directory of Recording Studios listed Northern Studios as: Owner George Lilly, Studio Manager Bill Riseman, and Chief Engineer David Butler having 2 24-track recording studios and providing services for mixing, dubbing, editing, tape mastering, and remote operations.
A few of the artists that cited recording in the studio include: Boston, Talking Heads, Stanton Davis, Thundertrain, Pezband.
Aerosmith, Jonathan Edwards, J. Geils Band, and The Cars have been rumored or reported to do work there, but we are unable to locate any album credits. They possibly used the studios for demos or recordings that did not make it to the final releases.
The Talking Heads did a live broadcast for WCOZ from the studio on November 17, 1977 included performances "Psycho Killer", "Pulled Up", "Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town", "A Clean Break (Let's Work)" and others.
