Ray entered the service in June 1942. He flew the B-17 Flying Fortress as a Radio Operator.

He came home for a short furlough to Harrison Street in April 1943, before going back to duty at the Army Air Field in Salina. Kansas. He was 32 years old.

Information from his sister indicated that she was told their B-17 crew crashed in Ryhle, North Wales, England, while going on leave. Newspaper articles suggested that possibly their heavily damaged aircraft crashed on return from a bombing mission,

Ray is survived by his mother, a brother at Pearl Harbor, and two married sisters. He is buried in Cambridge, England. (D-5-15)

The portrait is on display in the Maynard Veterans' Wall of Honor in the Soup Campbell Room, Lower Level of Maynard Town Hall.
