Description

James V. King was born in Maynard in 1911. He was the son of James J. (born 1874) and Ellen F. (born 1876), both born in Newfoundland. He had one brother, Matthew B. (born 1907 in Maynard). He grew up in Maynard and graduated from Maynard High School Class of 1929. His nickname was Jimmy from time as a child through his retirement. He was a Catholic and very religious. He attended mass most every day and participated in many church events. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

In his work for the town, he spent 45 years in various positions. He started work in 1932 as a member of the administrative staff for the Civil Works Administration (CWA) and Emergency Relief Administration (ERA) until 1936. In 1936, he became the coordinator of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) until 1942. In October 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he was a Yeoman First Class, serving until 1945. In 1945, he returned to work for the town, appointed Assistant Town Accountatn and Secretary for the Highway Department. He continued until 1951. In 1951, he was appointed Town Accountant. He also performed duties as Assistant Town Clerk, Clerk for the Retirement Board, and Executive Secretary to the Board of Selectmen. He retired in 1977 after some 45 years of service. A testimonial in his honor was held at the Town Building on November 13, 1977. This was followed by a dinner that evening at Alphonse's Powder Mill Restaurant. (The Elks Hall in 2024.)

James "Jimmy" King passed away in 1987.
