Title
Maynard Coal Company - 1920s - 1940s
Description
Axel Lawson, the father of Dick Lawson who was a school physical education teacher, owned and operated the Maynard Coal Company from the 1920s through the 1940s. He conducted business from the offices on 127 Main St. The actual coal yard was behind it that crossed a bridge over the Assabet River to an area below the railroad tracks embankment. The railroad cars would dump under the spur rail shed roof to the loading area below.
The business was bought by the Zancewicz family who later converted to oil. It was originally owned by W. F. Litchfield who built the bridge across the river in 1906.
