Florence Wilder, Emerson Junior High School Teacher and Principal:

Florence M. Wilder was born on July 9, 1900 in Maynard. She was the daughter of Frank E Wilder (b. 1856), and Margaret A. Murphy (b. 1861). She had two brothers – Frank Jr. (b. 1892) and Fred (b. 1895). Both brothers excelled in baseball and pitched in the minor leagues of professional baseball. She also had two sisters – Grace V. (b. 1897) and Dorothy L. (B 1904).

She grew up in the New Village section of Maynard. She graduated from Maynard High School in 1919. She attended Fitchburg Normal College and studied to be a teacher. She began teaching in Maynard at the Emerson Junior High School in 1923. She taught mathematics, spelling, and literature. She later became principal in 1944. She retired in 1966.

During that time, she was on the Building Committee to construct the Memorial Gymnasium on Summer Street. It opened in 1957, and it was torn down in 2012. She spent the last few years of her life living at 47 Walnut Street. behind the Corner Store. She volunteered on the Centennial Committee in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
