Grid Gleanings -
How about this - Maynard's Supt. of Schools, Albert Lerer, has never lost to a Concord team as active participant. As a player, his teams won twice and tied once against the locals (Concord-Carlisle) and as a coach, his teams won five from Concord.
He was captain of the 1923 eleven, which whipped Concord... Two sons of Concord natives will be in the Maynard lineup - Herbie Symes, the co-captain and Jim Ruggiero ... Herbie's father helped beat Maynard in 1937 and in 1936 scored the locals only "TD"... He was on the Concord State Champion baseball team in 1937... Ruggerio's pa, a police sergeant, was also born in Concord... Young Ruggiero scored both touchdowns last year - remember!
This is Maynard's Coach Wil DeRosa's 13th season - he's the dean of the local coaches now... Jim Smith, elongated end for Concord, just became eligible after the Wakefield game, after transferring last spring from a New York school ... This gives Concord two Smiths - but not the Smith brothers.
Brother vs. Brother -
It will be brother vs. brother on the sidelines when Maynard visits Concord, Saturday.
For Maynard, known as the Tigers, the assistant coach is Jimmy Duggan and for the Concord, known as the Patriots, the freshman coach and assistant is Tommy Duggan, Jr.
