Title
Building Designation / Navigation Sign
Digital
Digital
Description
These signs were posted to help the employees know where they were in the Mill. (Similar wayfinding signs were used in other Digital facilities.)
MLO12-2 means Maynard Mill, building 12, 2nd floor.
Prior to July 1982 all Digital buildings had a two letter code. E.g., ML was for the Mill, PK for Parker Street, etc. Because of the Digital's rapid expansion in the late 1970's and early 1980s the two letter code for each facility would soon exhaust the 676 combinations. So Digital adopted a 3-letter code system (allowing 17,576 possible combinations). The letter "O" was added to all location codes in existence at that time. The Maynard Mill, for example changed from ML to MLO. (You can use this code-shift to help start dating of documents that reference Digital building codes and when buildings were constructed/acquired.)
