Title
Sangamo Electric Company Meter
Description
This is a 40 cycle Type H Watthour Meter used in the Assabet Mills.
In September 1902, the Assabet Mills provided electric lighting for the towns of Maynard and Acton. It was 40 cycle current. When radio and other electrically operated equipment was first introduced to the town the 40 cycle current presented a problem. This was overcome in 1931 with the advent of the 60 cycle current of the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of Boston (now Boston Edison). Up until this time Maynard, MA and Milford, NH were the only places in New England using 40 cycle current.
