Title

Aerial Photograph of Alumni Field

Description

A photograph of Alumni Field and surrounding area taken from an airplane.

Orientation: The view is from the south looking north. Great Road runs along the top of the image.

The lower left shows a hockey rink (1934-1970-ish). Originally built in 1934 as part of the Alumni Field WPA project that also erected the Field House, the original rink was a concrete "tub" filled with water. In the 1960s the rink was rebuilt, complete with boards by the Vikings semi-pro hockey team that played there. The rink was later converted into basketball courts.

The Field House (red roofed building north of the hockey rink) was used as a locker room until the Maynard High School (1964-2013) was built.

The intersection of Great Road and Parker Street is a rotary. The rotary was converted to traffic lights in 1980 to improve the increased flow of traffic caused by the large Digital Equipment facility on Parker Street.

In the upper-right corner is Glenwood Cemetery.

Across Parker Street from the Cemetery (to the left) was a Quonset Hut, built in 1947, that was used as the DPW highway garage, housing equipment there. The hut was eventually loaded with asbestos insulation and the cost of removing the hut and contents was borne by Mass DPW as part of the traffic light project in 1980.

The land area was donated to the Boys & Girls Club in the 1970s.
